The Road to Oriel 2016

The Senior Boy’s, soccer team started their run to the Leinster North East Final with a 2-0 win over Beaufort College in Navan. It wasn’t a great start for the team losing Sean Hughes within five minutes to a knee injury that has kept him out of all of our matches.  The win was achieved through excellent goals by Steven Murray and Eoin Nulty in the second half.

With one win under our belts the next match was a home match against Nobber, with the winner heading the group and having a home semi-final.  The team started well but unfortunately within twenty minutes were down to 10 men as Dylan Hand received two yellows.  The team picked themselves up and finished the game with a 3- 2 score line.  The important goals in achieving the win were scored by Joey Somerville (2) and Coilin Griffin (1).

The semi-final was against Balbriggan, the league title holders, and both sides started well with good technical displays by both teams. Then Joey Somerville was pulled down in the box and we were awarded a penalty.  Joey, with his usual style, put the penalty away and we had a 1-0 lead.  Balbriggan now poured on the pressure and had several near misses.  However, during a box scramble one of the Balbriggan players got a straight red after an incident involving our goalie Conor Rattigan.

After that the game got tight and more physical. The referee awarded another penalty for a hand ball in the square by Balbriggan and we were winning 2-0 at half time.  Balbriggan came back strong in the second half and scored a goal leaving it 2-1.  Steven Murray ran in from the wing and drove the ball into the corner of the net leaving us 3-1 up.  Balbriggan came back with another goal (3-2) and during the last 15 minutes our mid-field and defence held tight and closed the game out.  The final score was 3-2 to Athboy.

The Final is due to be held in the home grounds of Dundalk FC, Oriel Park, on the week of the 18th of January 2016.

Congratulations to the team on their excellent efforts to date and we wish them all the very best for the Final.

Athboy C.S. Trip to Old Trafford

It was a very busy weekend for 47 second year students from Athboy Community School and five intrepid teachers as they travelled on Friday January 22nd via Holyhead to Old Trafford to see the F.A. Premiership match between Manchester United and Southampton the following day. The trip was organised by Woodwork teacher Mr. Jason O’Grady, ably assisted by Mr. Anthony Sheridan, Mr Kevin Murphy, Ms Siún Ní Raghallaigh and Ms Louise Byrne.

After a morning spent in the Trafford Shopping Centre it was time for the Athboy group to head to Old Trafford and their seats in the Stretford End. They were delighted to see the United team take to the field complete with stars such as Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and David DeGea. The game didn’t quite go to plan though with a debut goal for Charlie Austin right at the end seeing the Saints pull of a 1-0 win.

The day was rounded off with a few more hours of retail therapy in the Trafford Centre. The students also got a tour of the state of the art team bus of Southampton F.C. which was parked in their hotel car park.

On the Sunday morning the group travelled back to Old Trafford for a stadium and museum tour. The students got to sit in the United dressing room as well as the dugouts, and visit the bulging trophy room, player’s lounge, press area and tunnel.

The group had a fantastic trip and wish to put on record their thanks to their teachers, especially Mr O’Grady who worked so hard on their behalf to organise and run the trip.

Proclamation Day

Pupils and staff of Athboy Community School marked the National Proclamation Day on Tuesday March 15th with a Flag-Raising and Proclamation Ceremony which took place in splendid sunshine at the front of the school building.

Preceding the ceremony which was held at noon, all staff and students in the school were divided into class groups for seminars on the proclamation, stories about the Easter Rising, the tricolour and the political climate of 1916 for the duration of the whole morning. Students were then invited to compose a class proclamation together to address issues that pertain to present day Ireland, her history and her future.

Classes focussed on issues like peace, inclusion, environmental awareness and both rights and responsibilities of an Ireland moving forward as well as celebrating the rich history and tradition of the country.

With a proclamation drawn up, each class nominated two students to meet with their Year head so as to draw up a proclamation for each year with a blend of ideas and philosophies for each of the class groups they represented.

After the Year proclamations were completed, they were read aloud to the entire school at the proclamation ceremony at noon. It is planned that each will be framed and mounted and displayed in school to mark the occasion.

The Irish Tricolour was raised at twelve noon. This had been presented to the school’s Student Council at a ceremony attended by President Michael D. Higgins at Croke Park the previous week. Two members of the Student Council, Conor Kelly and Mollie Ennis hoisted the flag on Proclamation Day. Afterwards the national anthem Amhrán na bhFiann was performed by the school’s music class and choir and the 1916 proclamation of the Irish Republic was read aloud in Irish by Saoirse O’Looney and in English by Karen Larkin, both Sixth Year pupils in the school.

The 1st year proclamation was read by Katie Wheeler and Lewis Casserly. They were followed by Michael Garry who read the 2nd year proclamation. Armand Mola read aloud the 3rd year proclamation with Ryan Deane-Maughan delivering the 5th Year document.  The 6th year proclamation was read by Suzie Tubridy and Conor Strong.

Athboy C.S. French School Exchange Trip.

Over Easter week, eight 5th Year students from Athboy Community School took part in a French exchange with the Lyceé Jean Monnet in Crepy-en-Valois in the Oise Départment of the Picardy region of Northern France. This is the eleventh year of the exchange with the Lycee which is located close to the Autonne Valley area with whom Athboy has been twinned since 2000

On Friday March 18th the Athboy group flew to Paris to begin the French end of the exchange along with teachers Mr. Anthony Leavy and Mr. Tony Magner. On the first full day, Saturday, the students took part in a treasure hunt in their host town of Crepy-en-Valois taking in the old town, the house of Joan of Arc, St. Denis Cathedral, the town walls and medieval ramparts.

Sunday was a day spent with their host families and the students enjoyed a full day trip to Paris. The first sight was the Stade de France in St. Denis where Ireland will play Sweden in June in Euro 2016. Afterwards the group continued on a walking tour of Trocadero, Champs De Mars and of course, the Eiffel Tower. The group completed the tour by walking part of the Champs Elysees to the Arc De Triomphe and with a stroll along the Seine.

Monday was taken up with a trip to Reims, the capital of the Champagne-Ardennes region of France famous for its magnificent cathedral where French kings were crowned in the days before the republic. The group did a walking tour beginning at the cathedral which also took in the World War 1 memorial, Carnegie Library, the Town Hall, the medieval city and of course the shopping district for some well-earned retail therapy. The students also enjoyed a full tour of the Fossier Biscuit Factory where the famous Bisciuts Rosé de Reims are made.

Tuesday was spent in school doing a workshop on story-telling in both the French and Irish traditions. A local story-teller facilitated the workshop and told some well-known stories and legends of the local area and beyond. He spoke of the importance of these traditional stories and invited the Irish and French students to write and present their own using the techniques outlined in the workshop, various prompts such as cards and pictures and of course, their imagination. Afterwards the group visited the local cinema in Crepy for a private screening of the film ‘Desert Dancer’.

Wednesday was spent visiting the magnificent Chateau de Chantilly, affectionately known locally as ‘la petite Versailles’ built in 1560’s. The students enjoyed a tour of the chateau itself with its gallery and appartments as well as its gardens and the adjoining stables, Horse Museum and hippodrome where they were treated to a Dressage Show. Afterwards, as it was the final evening of the exchange, as a final goodbye the Lyceé hosted a soireé featuring music and traditional French cuisine. The Lycee Jean Monnet also planted a friendship tree to celebrate all the foreign exchanges it has been  involved with, including Athboy.

The busy itinerary continued on the final day, Thursday, with a tour of some of the local historical sights including Pierrefonds with its stunning castle overlooking a lake and the beautiful medieval city of Compiegne where Joan of Arc was finally apprehended. The students saw the magnificent Chateau de Compiegne built by Louis XV and extended by Emperors Napoleon I and Napoleon III, the Town Hall and St Jacques Cathedral. Afterwards there was time for shopping, bowling, carting and Quaser-Laser before the Irish group departed for Beauvais airport and home.

All the students and teachers felt that the trip was very successful. The pupils got a lot out of the exchange and made some lasting friendships. Some are even hoping to heading back to France in the summer to renew acquaintances with their host families.

Earlier in March, sixteen students from the French Lycee had visited Athboy for a week staying with host families in the locality. As well as attending classes with their Irish hosts, they enjoyed many cultural trips such as Newgrange, Croke Park Museum, Dublin city centre, Bettystown Strand and The Causey Experience.

The students Laura Brady, Clare Bray, Ruth Caffrey, Katie Rose Deane-Maughan, Roisín Gough, Esmee MacPherson, Niamh O’Driscoll and Megan Walsh would like to record their sincere thanks to their host families and to Mr. Anthony Leavy and Mdme Corinne Carillon who coordinated the exchange, teachers Mr Tony Magner of Athboy C.S. and Mdme Elodie Pagés of Lycee Jean Monnet who accompanied their group on the ‘away leg’ of the exchange as well as teachers Ms Collette Kane, Ms Anna Peyre and Mr Olivier André-Hesse for all their help.

The Under 14 Hurling team who made it the final of the Meath section of the Leinster C championship lost out narrowly on a place in the North Leinster Final by the minimum margin in an epic contest against Ratoath College in O’Growney Park, Athboy.  After the home team redressed a half-time deficit of 2-6 the match ended all square at the end of normal time.  At the end of extra time both teams were still level.  Additional extra time was then played with Ratoath College eventually winning by a point.

The squad did their school and mentors (Mr. Sheridan, Mr. Ennis and Mr. Noone) proud.  Best of luck to Ratoath College in the final against Clonaslee.  The team got a special mention at the school’s Awards Ceremony at the end of the year.
